Speedway Police Need Reserves

The December 28 resignation of reserve officer Kelly Stone dropped the number of available reserve officers to fourteen according to Speedway Police Chief Jeff Dine.
Dine informed the police commissioners at the January 8 meeting that it is necessary to begin recruitment after perusing through applications on file. Dine likes to maintain reserves at 18 to 20 officers.

He also noted the department was running lean with manpower in December due to four injured officers. To pick up the slack, some officers chose to forgo their vacation, however, they would now need to be compensated. Dine said the compensation is "straight time," and not time and a half.

Dine explained the department is in the process of restructuring its street crime unit to combat drugs and to be more proactive in high crime areas. He said these officers assigned to these covert operations would not be "first responders." First response would remain with the uniform police officers.

He said there are still vacancies that need to be filled among ranks. Promotional interviews would begin this week in order to fill the vacant sergeant's position.
It was announced that Dan Eacret and Jason Dierdorff received the status of permanent rank of lieutenant.

In other matters, Robert Dine received a letter recognizing his work in solving the Speedway Gas robberies.
