Transportation Submits
Summary Letter

The old business of bus surveys is finally coming to a close for the Speedway Transportation Board. At the December 11 meeting, the board agreed that the surveys should remain with board president Joe O’Neal.

O’Neal also said he submitted a summary letter to the council and town manager to explain the survey results. The October 17 letter contained no recommendation from the board. The council has made no reference to the letter. O’Neal said he would also author a letter to the editor to thank residents for their participation in the survey.

During the spring, the board attached 7,000 surveys to residents’ water bills to collect input about bus services in Speedway. The town of Speedway contracts with IndyGo for bus service. IndyGo increased the bus contract by $100,000 from 2005 to 2006. This contract spike alarmed the board as to how they could continue to finance the bus service at taxpayers’ expense if the trend continued. The board also observed small numbers in ridership and had also received some complaints from residents wanting to terminate the bus service. They did not want to see their tax dollars being spent for an under utilized service.

As the survey was distributed, some bus riders attended the meeting to voice the importance of bus transportation. At these meeting O’Neal said the surveys were not to end the service but to collect data.

O’Neal said the IndyGo’s 2007 contract is $248,978 which is down from the 2006 contract of $266,448.

The board will pay the final payment on the 2006 contract of $133,224 at the end of the month. The next meeting is February 12th at noon.
