RV Dumping Station Not Welcome
The Speedway Town Council directed IMS Engineer Kevin Forbes to find another
spot to locate the Recreational Vehicle Waste Dumping Station. The council
deemed that dead end of south Meyers Avenue site was a poor location because
of the surrounding residential homes. The site is owned by the IMS and
that area is used for RV camping.
Although no one officially remonstrated during the citizens comment portion of the meeting, the issue did stir emotions as some affected homeowners raised disgruntled tone of voices during the council discussion. Voices from the audience and Clerk Treasurer Sharon Zishka noted the area is in the flood plain and it would probably not be a good idea to locate waste dumping station in the area.
HNTB Engineer Gordon Evans said the waste dumping station is needed to prevent illegal dumping into the stream. Water Superintendent Mike Littlejohn and Waste Water Superintended Norm Berry are concerned the waste is being discharged into Dry Run Ditch or just released on to the ground. The service would be free to campers as an incentive not to dump illegally.
Evans said IMS plans to have the manned station open just nine days a year. The IMS requested to pay a residential sewer rates for this connection to the sanitary system. The station is designed to collect only wastewater. No flammable or oil products would be accepted.
Town Council Lu Hillmer did not think this residential location and the proximity to the campsite would be the Marion County Board of Health's approval.
Councilman Jeff Hartman said he would like the site moved to 9-A Gate so it would be away from the residential area. His suggestion drew applause from the crowd.
