Santa Claus parked his sleigh in lieu of a
motorcycle escort to 4900 W. 16th Street thanks to the help of the American
Legion Riders of 500 Post. The legion riders whizzed up and down streets
that comprise the Old Speedway City Neighborhood Association, drawing people
out of their homes to see Santa on the back of a motorcycle. The riders
even stopped at 15th and Winton Avenue to pose by an inflatable Santa on
motorcycle display. Pat Phillips, director of the legion riders, organized
the riders, some of whom wore elf hats, installed
lights on their rides, and even a little stuffed Santa that Santa Claus
called "Mini Me," in reference to the character in the Austin
Power movies.
The trip included an impromptu visit to Charlie Brown Pancake and Steak
House on Main Street where children delighted in seeing Santa go from table
to table to wish them a Merry Christmas.
The children spent time decorating the tree, cookies, along with coloring
activities while waiting to see Santa and Mrs. Claus. Santa, Mrs.
Claus and his elf sat down with the kids to hear requests, which ranged
from the traditional toys to
requests from the technologically savvy kids asking for Global Positioning Systems and IPODs.
Santa's evening arrival to the host facility for the event at Affaire All Occasion Catering was provided by VFW Ernie Pyle Post 1120's 1937 fire truck. The culmination of the event occurred at 6 pm when Speedway Police Chief Jeff Dine plugged in the tree lights to kick off Christmas On Main Street. The event was organized by the Speedway Promoters Club to highlight the assets of Speedway and to bring a community spirit of Christmas to the residents.
Approximately 200 people shared in the festivities.
