Discovery Day/Parents Day Needs Pre-Schoolers

(posted Jan 25)

Discovery Day/Parents Day is sending the word out into the community of its need for pre-school students.

Michelle Lidy of Speedway United Methodist Church, who serves as a board member of the program, said "This entire year has been a struggle."

The twenty year old program could be near the brink of closing if enrollment does not increase beyond the five students now enrolled.

The $75 monthly program is designed to teach beginning social skills and to prepare the older children for Kindergarten.

"The four and five year olds work on writing their names and other letters of the alphabet. The other younger kids work on the basics like colors, recognizing numbers and letters." The program is not always devoted to learning. Part of the structure includes play time and using the imagination.

Lidy spoke about her own past experience when she enrolled her daughter. She said the program offered her only child a chance to interact with other children as well as providing a good foundation for her daughter to apply in Kindergarten this year.
