Speedway residents and business owners:

The Speedway Redevelopment Commission has been working since late July 2006 to develop a master plan for a 350-acre area south of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that is bordered by 10th, 16th and Main streets and Olin Avenue. While this process has been lengthy, this concept will serve as our guide as we embark on the difficult task of stimulating growth and investment in this area.

Although our early intention was to present this plan to the public in mid-May, continued public input and critical dialogue with area businesses has necessitated a short delay in scheduling this event. The Speed Zone Master Plan public presentation will be held on Tuesday, June 19, at 6 p.m. in the Speedway High School Auditorium. We encourage the public to attend this presentation and continue its involvement in this redevelopment process. The only way we can succeed is to have the support of our community. We changed the date of the presentation because we believe that an additional month will ensure that the concept we unveil is the best option for Speedway.

Public input over the last 10 months has been extensive. During our monthly commission meetings, we have received and addressed various questions from the community. A steering committee comprised of representatives of the local community and businesses within the redevelopment area has been involved in the plan development and we have had continuous dialogue with our stakeholders and the community's taxpayers.

We conducted a kickoff "Carburetion Night" in November, followed by three days of public input and focus groups during a workshop facilitated by students and faculty from Ball State University. Since that time we have had numerous meetings with interested citizens and business owners, who provided additional input into the site plan, building designs and streetscapes.

Simultaneously, we worked to develop a Regional Transportation Corridor Study. This study was sponsored by the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Town of Speedway, and the Hulman Memorial Foundation. The results of this study provided a framework for roadways within the development area.

This has been a long and involved process, but the master plan is vital to successfully redeveloping this area. It's critical that we deliver a plan that is right for this community and we want to ensure everyone that their opinions are not only heard, but that they're considered. We're grateful for the enormous amount of support we've had throughout this process and look forward to unveiling a plan for the heart of Speedway on June 19.
