Kiwanis Needs Community SupportAfter 20 years of service, the Speedway Kiwanis Club may be marking its end of community service. Programs honoring the top ten Speedway High School Students and sponsoring the Speedway High School Key Club could fade away. The club is straddling the financial fence because of the February 14 winter snow-storm that hit during its traditional rose sale. “It is border-line,” Kiwanis member Mike Smith said about whether the organization will continue. The club lost $6,000 on the 2007 Valentine Rose sale because of the bad weather inhibiting people from stopping to purchase the flowers. “There was nothing wrong with the flowers,” he said. The club ended up giving the roses to nursing homes and other institutions. The Kiwanis will know by this summer if the club can make the financial turn to remain a viable active group. The club members are banking on two 50-50 raffles to pull them through. The first raffle is May 26 at the O’Reilly Race Park. The club will also have 50-50 raffle at the Busch Race at O’Reilly Race Park later in the season. |
