Library Said No To Joint Website

Speedway Library Board of Trustees agreed May 2 not to participate with the Town of Speedway’s shared website. Board member Katie Patterson said after she participated in the three vendors’ presentation to construct a website, she thought it would not be prudent to spend the library funds in that fashion.

Town Manager John McCurtain is interested in having a common website for the town, the school system and the library to keep the public more apprised with information. At the April 23 meeting, the council gave McCurtain the approval to explore the idea.

“This is not our mission. This takes away from our budget to buy other things the library needs,” she said. She noted the library can participate by serving as a link to the town’s future website.

The board also approved to borrow $55,000 from investments to cover the state’s late tax distribution. The tax bills are late going out because of the trending method used to assess property taxes. Property is now assessed by market value.

Library Director Darsi Bohr reported that seven juveniles were banned from using the computers for violating library policy of accessing myspace.com.

The library has a duty to protect juveniles from potential predators; therefore, the youth are blocked from the site. She said they were able to hit the site by using a proxy server. “The site is blocked. They just can’t access it. They knew what they were doing,” Bohr said.

She also noted that library had 182 wireless users for the month of April.

The board also approved of the cell phone policy that prohibits the use of cell phones by computers. Cell phone users may be asked to go outside if it disturbs patrons. The policy also approved for staff not to help patrons while using the cell phone until the call is finished.
