Speedway Organizes Its First Relay For LifeBig plans were in the works when 14 people gathered at the Speedway Public Library April 19 to organize Speedway’s first Relay For Life, with hopes to make it one of the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising events. Although the logistics are farfrom complete, the goal is to have the biggest turnout for a 24-hour fundraising walk. Steve Arisman, event chair, is seeking to have 40 teams to raise over $40,000 for the August 10 and 11 event at the Speedway Junior High School. “Everybody needs to recruit,” Arisman said. He asked the volunteers to continue to persevere even in the face of rejection because eventually someone will say yes to join the effort. It was Sibylle Walker’s idea to contact the American Cancer Society about bringing the Relay For Life to Speedway because everyone has been touched by cancer either personally or knows someone with the struggle. The Speedway High School Class of 1979 has recently lost three classmates within the year to cancer. Sharon Zishka was insired to attend the organizational meeting after losing her mother to cancer. Zishka is familiar with the Relay For Life because her sister is involved with the event in Mooresville. Her sister’s participation inspired her to become involved with Speedway’s inaugural walk. Arisman is no stranger to cancer either. Arisman’s wife Bethe is a cancer survivor. Her battle with cancer changed the couple’s lives to helping others with cancer. Arisman explained when his wife went through cancer treatment at Indiana University Hospital, they would see children undergoing treatment as well. The couple became impressed with the kids’ resilience as they went through their tough times of chemotherapy and radiation. From this experience, the Arismans started Camp CareFree Indiana about three years ago to provide an opportunity for children to have fun during their bout with cancer. He said one fun adventure included chartering a bus to take the children to Holiday World. The nonprofit organization also helps the children’s families who are struggling financially. The organization often assists with gas cards or car repairs. For those interested in participating in the Relay For Life, contact sibyllewalker@remax.net or 317- 698-6258. Future Relay for Life meetings are at the Speedway Public Library from 7PM-8PM June 27 and July 26 |
