Grande Avenue Vacation Process Can Start Anytime

G.M. Allison Transmission does not need to wait for a recommendation from the regional transportation study to start the vacation process of Grande Avenue.

Allison can initiate the vacation process by filing a petition to vacate just the section of the road it is adjacent to or it can file a petition to vacate the entire street from Tenth to Michigan Road. This would require the other abutting property owners to consent to the vacation.

The petition would include a legal description of the vacated area and declaratory resolution (an ordinance) to be approved by the Marion County Plat Committee. The Speedway Redevelopment Commission can support the petition, but the ultimate authority comes from the plat committee. Surrounding neighbors will know if a petition process has started because orange public notice signs will be displayed along the street 23 days before the public hearing.

The Speedway Navigator conducted a travel log to check the time differentials if Grande is closed. The current route of 10th and Grande Avenue to Gasoline Alley is about 40 seconds.

Vacating Grande Avenue will add about two minutes to reach Gasoline Alley, from either westbound 10th to Cossell to Gasoline Alley, or eastbound 10th to Holt Road to Michigan Street and back west to Grande Avenue Vacation Process Can Start Anytime Grande and Gasoline Alley. This was done at 5:15 p.m. on a Friday without being detained by red lights.
One business owner does not view the extra time as much as a detriment than creating an isolated area. This will make the businesses more vulnerable to crime.
