New 73rd Street exit ramp off I-465 open to traffic

INDIANAPOLIS – A new exit ramp linking I-465 northbound to 73rd Street opened to traffic shortly after the morning rush hour today on the city’s northwest side. The new exit breaks off from the interstate to the east, passing over 71st Street before joining with 73rd Street at Woodland Drive.

The new ramp was built under the I-465 Northwest FastTrack project to keep eastbound traffic moving on 71st Street. During the morning peak, commuters exiting onto 71st Street previously had to merge across multiple lanes of traffic in a short distance to turn left onto northbound Woodland Drive.

The ramp will end with a two-way stop at the 73rd Street intersection with Woodland Drive, with Woodland Drive traffic having the right of way. Work at the 71st and 86th Street interchanges with I-465 on the northwest side is expected to wrap up in July.
