York and Bray Buy Merritt's Pizza

Junkyard Dogs Cafe & Grill owners Greg York and Jon Bray are expanding westward. As of July 1, York and Bray will be the new owners of Merritt's Pizza. The two will initially be running across the parking lot quite frequently as they plan to operate both businesses and merge the menus.

The Merritt's Pizza name stays because the name recognition has been around for along time in Speedway. York and Bray wanted those loyal Merritt's Pizza customers to know that the pizza menu and ingredients stay, but customers can expect new additions to the menu. The two men have been toying with the idea of how to create a Junkyard Dog Chicago style pizza. Although the pizzeria hours are from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, customers will be able to experience an early bite of pizza by going to the Junkyard Dog on Thursdays, where pizza will be served from 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday hours at Merritt's remain 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Bray plans to keep making pizzas in the original building during buffet hours and cart it over to the cafe.

"It doesn't take that long to make a pizza," he said.

The Junkyard Dog will also be featuring the Blue Bunny ice cream brand that will include Turtle Bars and Big Boppers. Customers can also purchase cones, sundaes and milk shakes. "People have been asking for milkshakes", York said. Once a week banana splits will be the daily feature.

"We'll just offer them one day a week because bananas go bad very quickly. We decided to offer ice cream because of the limited places it is offered in town", Bray said.

Bray said only Baskin and Robbins, Chocolate Gallery and a few others offer ice cream.

"Business is great here thanks to Speedway's support," York said.

York and Bray like to give back to Speedway by being involved in the community. They are hosting the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life car bash July 21. York invites people come to 5240 W. 16th Street and take a sledge hammer to a beater car to support the cancer society. He also noted the Junkyard Dog will be the new meeting site for the Optimist Club.
