Bid Specifications Are Streamlined

(posted July 29)

The Speedway Town Council directed Ed Stresino of the Speedway Solid Waste Commission to revise bid specifications to bundle trash and recycling services to save money.

The commission currently sends out two separate bid specifications for trash and recycling services.

The council members did not have a problem with Best Way's co-mingling recycling procedures that take a larger volume from the waste stream. Stresino raised the point at the July 25 budget hearing meeting that Ray's Trash takes higher quality recyclables of only plastic number 1 and 2. The exclusion of the lower grade plastics creates a higher quality end product, but it doesn't reduce the waste stream like Best Way.

Council President Bill Golay suggested the bundling procedure because he contends Best Way offers free recycling with weekly trash pickup. He thought this would encourage more people to recycle if a weekly service is offered. Stresino said he would look into Best Way's program.

Councilman Jeff Hartman suggested having bigger cans with lids to prevent papers and recyclables from falling out.

Solid Waste Commissioner Christie Manion requested placing notice in the water bills about the Oct 6 heavy trash drop off day at 1390 Lynhurst Drive. She noted that heavy trash participation has been dropping since they do no longer do door to door notice anymore. Councilor Gary Raikes suggested she contact youth service organizations to help with the door to door notice.
