Eagledale Receives Federal Grant(revised Aug 8 to add the DOJ press release) (posted Aug 7) Tim Horty of the United States Attorney's office for the Southern District of Indiana announced August 2 that Eagledale is an official weed and seed designated area. The boundaries are 46th Street on the north to 25th Street, excluding Speedway, and I-65 on the east side to I-465. Weed and Seed is Department of Justice program that provides five year grant money to weed out crime and to seed the area with crime prevention programs. Eagledale's mission is to focus on rooting out drugs and to deter crime with youth programs. In 2006, then Indianapolis Police Chief Michael Spears pushed for Eagledale to apply for the designation. A weed and seed task force was formed, comprising of IPD District West Police Chief Tim Horty, IPD staff, prosecutors from the Marion County Prosecutor' s Office, Eagledale Neighborhood Association members Margaret Arthur, Marvin Martin, and Dennis Rosenberger, and local residents to develop a crime preventative program for the area to serve Eagledale and the Lafayette Square Area. |
