Speedway Police Investigate Apartment Shooting

Capt Upchurch of the The Speedway Police department issued this press release on Tuesday's shooting.

The quick action of two Speedway Police Officers has led to the arrest of a shooting suspect. On August 7 Sgt. Trent Theobald and Officer Michael Clupper were at the Kohl's Department Store parking lot, and heard a series of gunshots coming from the Hermitage Apartment complex. Sgt. Theobald drove into the apartment complex and observed a black male running with a gun in his hand. Once
the suspect observed Sgt.Theobald, the suspect entered 2312 Hermitage Court. Other officers joined Sgt. Theobald, and the officers were directed to 2262 Hermitage Court.

A concerned citizen told the officers the suspect entered the rear door of that address. While searching the common area of the apartment entry way, the suspect exited apartment #1001. The suspect,  identified as Dontezes D. Conway, 23, was taken into custody.

The victim of the shooting was located by officer Clupper at 2304 Hermitage Way. The victim told officer Clupper that he was standing outside when three black males attempted to jump him. The victim got into a fight with one of the black males who pulled a handgun from his pant pocket. The suspect shot the victim in the leg.

The victim was transported to Methodist Hospital for treatment.

A witness observed the victim and Conway get into a physical altercation. The witness attempted to separate the two as they fought. Conway pulled the handgun from his pant pocket, and fired several shots.

The witness noticed that the victim had been shot in the leg.

Lt. Jason arrived to complete the investigation. Lt. located Conway's handgun inside the apartment at 2262 Hermitage Court. The resident of the apartment told Lt, that she was not familiar with Conway. and had no idea he had entered her apartment,

Lt. interviewed Conway at the Speedway Police Department. Conway told Lt. he was  sitting in front of 2304 Hermitage Way when he was approached by two individuals. Conway got into a  verbal confrontation with one of the individuals. Conway told Lt. that he fired two warning shots into the ground, but the two individuals continued toward him. Conway fired a third shot which struck the victim in the leg. Conway admitted to running away after the shooting, and entering the apartment
at 2262 Hermitage Court where he hid his gun.

Conway was arrested for Attempted Murder, Class II-A" felony; Criminal Recklessness, Class "C" felony, and Residential Entry, Class "D" felony.

Speedway Police detectives are investigating a shooting that happened around 8.30 pm Tuesday night.
The shooting occurred in the 2200 block of Hermitage Way.

No details have been released about the suspect captured at the scene or the victim's condition.
