Beacon Of Hope Will Change Lives

Terry Moore of Beacon of Hope is calling on the community to stop domestic violence. Moore, the Speedway Navigator, and three other women have initiated a task force to start a domestic violence shelter in Speedway or on the Westside. The group is in the process of organizing its non-profit status and board of directors.

This faith based organization is moving rapidly, trying to put a dent in the rejection rate of existing shelters due to lack of capacity. As many as 1,400 women are turned away each year in Marion County. Marion County Deputy prosecutors are supporting the cause and indicated another shelter is needed. She noted that Speedway Detective Jim Thiele and Marion County Community Prosecutor Robert Reel have attended the meetings.

"We should listen to them," she said.

Domestic violence robs women of their dignity and self-worthiness and the goal of Beacon of Hope is to restore their dignity. She noted that 75% of children witness domestic violence in action and many of them grow up to become abusers. Her message to end domestic violence drew applause from the audience.

Moore, a survivor of domestic violence, made her plea to ask for resources, especially in the need of donated office and shelter space. Moore made her presentation to the Speedway Town Council to apprise them that a task force is at work in the community to end domestic violence through the Beacon of Hope.
