Upgrading Ball Diamonds Should Help Drainage

(posted Aug 17)

Speedway Waste Water Treatment Plant Superintendent Norm Berry and Street Department Commissioner Walt Wendall informed the Speedway Town Council that  they visited the Eagledale Little League Baseball Diamonds at Shambaugh Park on 30th Street to investigate residents' questions about the large amount of dirt piles there and the dump truck traffic on 30th.

When initially contacted by the Navigator, an Indy Parks Public Information Officer officer indicated that the baseball diamonds were not park property and told the Navigator that Ritter High School was involved in the construction.

On August 14, an Indy Parks PIO researched further on the excavation work at Randy Shambaugh Park. Ritter High School, in conjunction with Eagledale Little League, is upgrading the ball diamonds along with new dugouts and fencing. Indy Parks is also leveling out another ball diamond closer to the school. The excess dirt should not interfere with the flow of Dry Run Creek. The digging raised concerns with the town of Speedway that it could change drainage flow.

On August 16, Norm Berry, superintendent of Speedway Waste Water Treatment Plant, said "I spoke to a representative from Ritter High School who owns the property and is doing the project with some assistance from Indy Parks. They are filling in low areas in the outfield to restore the area to original grade and then hydra seeding. The project should actually improve the area by eliminating standing water and creating a more consistent drainage pattern."
