ENA Celebrates 10 Years at The Median

A group of Eagledale Neighborhood Association members gathered at the median at 34th Street and Lafayette Road to celebrate 10 years since erecting the Eagledale sign and adopting the median.

"It's Marvin's Median," Marvin Martin quipped. Martin spends everyday cleaning up the median that often serves as a sanctuary for Canadian Geese and yellow canaries. The ENA is serious about keeping the median clean. In 2005, the neighborhood association received a no tolerance trash award from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. Martin told the story of how past members Helen and Christie Struck adopted this median because it was full of litter. "It looked awful," he said.

It still remains a never ending battle to keep the median litter free. Martin said he has turned identifiable trash to IMPD Environmental Officer Kevin Kinnee. Martin was astounded to learn that some of the trash was being dumped by nearby neighbors.

ENA was also involved with the clean up of Falcon Creek. He said it took Indiana Department Environmental Management's intervention to fine those who were responsible for polluting the water. A garage door, cash registers, and shopping carts were some of the items pulled from the creek.

ENA member Robin Annario said she joined ENA about two years ago even though it has been around for 50 years. "I have lived here all of my life. I was even born in my parents' house. My dad had to go out to flag the ambulance down because the neighborhood was new."

Orin Killebrew of ENA expects the new 36 inch x 36 inch Welcome to Eagledale sign to be completed soon. The new sign is bilingual to embrace the Hispanic and Latino community. Martin was hoping the sign would be ready for the anniversary celebration, but scheduling problems have forced a delay.

ENA President Harry Simpson stopped by to eat some cake. He noted that the neighborhood association just received another lawsuit from a mortgage company trying to collect on a loan in default. "This happens all of the time. The mortgage companies get the neighborhood association confused with a homeowners' association that requires dues to live in a neighborhood. They are trying to collect HOA dues to recover on the defaulted loan."
