Main Street Business Burglarized

(posted Oct 23)

Main Street Attraction Antique Mall is beefing up security after its October 22 break-in.

The owners, Bill and Connie Norton, explained they were notified about 1:30 am by ADT Security that movement was being detected and ADT wanted to know if ADT should call the police.

Mrs. Norton described the crime scene as "shattered glass was everywhere" when they arrived in the early morning hours. "I even had to take the vacuum cleaner out to run it over the sidewalk to get all of the glass cleaned up," she said.

She noted they stayed until 7 am and were grateful for nearby neighbors who helped to clean up. Mrs. Norton said as they were leaving to drive home they discovered a cash register on 15th Street, but it wasn't theirs.

"This won't run us out. No way, we are here to stay. We are planning to celebrate our second anniversary of the store opening on December 5," she said. She wanted the public to know that the plywood across the window is temporary until the broken glass is replaced.

Sheilah Adams of Alterations Plus understands the Norton's loss and aggravation because she too recently suffered a loss to her business due to a September fire. Adams now is in the process of planning her grand reopening on November 5.

Adams too has not given up as she still continues to work in the make shift office at 1432 Main Street. She credited the community spirit that received at the September 22 Main Street Parade as an emotional boost to keep going.

Adams reflected on that day when she turned the corner from staging area on Gilman Street onto Main Street. "I heard the crowd clapping and saying the words 'Way to go. She is here after fire.' " The community support meant a lot to her.
