Garden Ridge opened its doors February 18 in what general manager Tim Warner called a "soft opening." It gives people an opportunity to come in the doors to browse and see what they need for their home interior and exterior needs.

Warner indicated about a dozen customers have stopped in without any advertising to lure them inside the doors. The grand opening is scheduled for mid-March and will include special long hours and sales.

As far as inventory, Warner said the inventory is not geared towards a certain demographic market. People won't find welcome mats that say IU or Purdue, but customers can expect daily truck deliveries filled with new inventory.

Warner explained Garden Ridge's decision to come to the Lafayette Square Area is its accessibility to I-65. Garden Ridge selected the former Builders Square building located at 4641 Lafayette Road because the building offered the right square footage. The building had been vacant for 12 years.

He said the Garden Ridge is also looking at another site on the east side of town.

Jalicia Howard is one of the 130 new employees that are needed to operate the store. She said she applied for the job because "I wanted to try something new."
Garden Ridge's phone number is 317-644-2100. Warner noted the phone message did not include hitting zero to connect with the operator.
