Underground Fuel Tank Leak Discovered

(posted Feb 13)

Keramida Environmental reported an underground storage tank leak on December 19 at the Firestone Auto Service Center, located at 3919 Lafayette Road. The initial incident report released by IDEM said corrosion caused the two 10,000 gallon gas tanks to leak. The leak was discovered after Simon Property Group conducted an environmental phase II investigation on December 11.

According to Barry Sneed of IDEM, a 1983 site map shows the area as a two pump island, but further investigation is being conducted to determine if a gas station was operating at the location.

The  report also indicated that groundwater was impacted because the water table is only 10 feet below the surface. A more detailed investigation will determine the amount of contamination as well as the distance it has traveled by using data from monitoring wells installed December 19.

An initial site characterization plan should be submitted to IDEM by Feb 18 that will include more detail and scope of the problem and mitigation plans.
