SRC to Review Parcel Acquisition List

(posted Oct 30)

The Speedway Redevelopment Commission is stepping back from its October 16th decision to place all the parcels in the Speed Zone and redevelopment area two on an acquisition list. The SRC wanted to place the parcels on a list to be ready to purchase properties that were foreclosed or auctioned at a tax or sheriff's sale. At its October 27 meeting, the commission decided to examine the status of each parcel before placing it on the list.

Commissioner Benny Grove said the commission could not acquire property during the October county tax sale because some of the parcels were not on an acquisition list, stating the American Inn was one of the opportunities it missed.

"This has nothing to do with eminent domain of property," President Vince Noblet said.

Commissioner Ron Fisher called it "ludicrous" for the SRC to deal with people from out of town who purchased property through the tax sale because the SRC had not taken the proper steps to acquire parcels. He explained the SRC only has to wait 120 days before it can take possession of property it acquires in a tax sale, the normal waiting period is one year.

The commission is expected to approve the list by concurrence before the next public hearing. Benny Grove and Steve Bishop volunteered to work with Executive Director Scott Harris to review parcels to be placed on the list.

Fisher wants the SRC to have an acquisition available by January to be ready for the spring tax sale.
