Council Needs Residents to Fill Positions

(posted Dec 9)

Speedway Redevelopment Commissioner Steve Bishop will not need to submit a letter of resignation to return to his former position serving on the Community Development Corporation. Although not yet officially appointed, Bishop did receive a nomination from Council President Gary Raikes during the December 8 town council meeting. Attorney Kim Blanchet said a letter would not be necessary since Bishop's term on the redevelopment commission expires December 31. Raikes also nominated James Dillard, who is currently serving on the CDC.

Raikes held off from making his nomination for the three appointments to the Speedway Redevelopment Commission. Councilor Jeff Hartman nominated Vince Noblet and Lu Hillmer nominated Benny Grove.

Jim Ochs was nominated to continue serving on the police commission and Lisa Edington was nominated to serve another term on the parks and recreation board.

The council had no nominations for the alcoholic beverage commission or the storm water management board. The storm water management board needs a Republican to serve in that position.

The council also nominated Mike Simonson, Brian Bailey and Dave Smith to serve on the Board of Zoning Appeals. If approved, it would be a reappointment for all three men.

Raikes urged people to submit letters of interest before the December 22 council meeting to serve on the commissions.

The council also approved first reading of ordinance 1134 concerning salaries of councilors and the clerk-treasurer. The council did not elaborate on the details about the ordinance. After the meeting, Raikes said it was not a pay raise. Hillmer said the council has not had a raise from their $4,800 salary in about nine years.
