STA Could be Hindered By SRC

The Speedway Trail Association's plans to develop M & J Limited Partnership's abandoned corridor into a trail may come to its death knell due to the redevelopment expansion plans. STA member Herman Greenwood raised the issue of its fate at the March 26 Trails meeting.

The members are concerned that gaining easement rights from M & J Limited Partnership could be nixed since the parcels were included in the recent March 25 Speed Zone expansion. The expansion gobbled up the parcels from around 16th Street and Crawfordsville Road to Lynhurst Drive. The M & J property is the abandoned Conrail corridor that parallels Crawfordsville Road.

STA President Beverly Alexander said the Speedway Redevelopment Commission is aware of the STA's plans, but the commission wants the property for the realignment of 16th Street and the roundabout. Alexander said that Jerry Bratton of M & J Limited Partnership and STA have been in discussions about easement rights. Alexander explained that Bratton has been supportive of the trails and offered to have a water stop for the April 19 Diamond in the Rough Event and use of the old railroad bed.

Susan Luebbert contended the rest of the Conrail corridor is in Area 2 starting at Lynhurst Drive extending west to Cunningham Road and into the Marsh Shopping Center.

Another issue raised is the possibility of using the town's unpaved 23rd Street as a linear trail. The unpaved road links Auburn Street and Georgetown Road. The town's untapped asset could be a stepping stone to the start of a trail system. No action was taken.

The STA recognized board member resignations from Joe O'Neal and Linda Karn.
