Speedway Public Safety Day April 19

(posted Mar 10)

The Speedway Police and Fire departments will hold their annual public safety day on Saturday April 19 at Leonard Park.  Speedway Police Assistant Chief Joel Rush told the Police Commissioners during their monthly meeting on March 10 that the Speedway Little League is planning to hold its opening day parade at the same location, and the Speedway Trails Association's Diamond In the Rough  5k Run / Walk / Ride is also scheduled for the same day at the park.  Rush said the groups are collaborating on their events to avoid conflicts and that further details would be forthcoming.

The commission received a letter of commendation citing the efforts of Detective Jim Thiele, Officer Lauren Keelor and Officer Kyle Hodges for their participation in the DARE program.  Detective Thiele has been in the program for seven years, Keelor for three and Hodges for one.

Dispatch supervisor Sarah Edie will begin the interview process for hiring a new dispatcher.  The department  has five applicants to process through background checks.

Rush said the reserve academy will hold its last class and testing on March 29.  The graduation ceremony will be in the third week of April with the exact date to be determined.

The police department has not had any further contact with the Speedway Super Center management about moving the substation office to the old management office near Parkwood Drive.  Rush said he was told in December that the new location would be ready in February with the department expected to move in March.
