WISH-TV's Dick Wolfsie called the first Diamond in the Rough 5K run/walk/bike
"an historic event." The 5k event served as the Speedway Trails
Association's first fund raiser to start developing Speedway's section
to link the B & O Trail to Indianapolis and to Hendricks County.
Wolfsie, a trail user himself, said "I walk the Monon Trail all the
time.
John Meyers of Indy Greenway Development Committee attended the event as well as Ron Carter, executive director of Indy Greenways Foundation.
"This could not be any better example of change going on in Speedway. I can not think of any negatives about trail development. It is all positive. It brings people closer together," Meyers said.
Carter was astounded to see the amount of progress the STA had made while still in its infancy. Carter attended some of the early meetings that formed the association. The association is less than a year old. "It is gratifying to see the amount of interest."
Jerry Bratton showed up after everyone had left the start line. He said he just finished his Bible Study and was running late.
Approximately 171 participants registered for the April 19 event.
