Legality of Redevelopment Authority's First Meeting Questioned

(posted May 16)

The Speedway Redevelopment Authority's first meeting will apparently break the open door law by not giving 48 hour notice.

Hoosier State Press Association legal counsel Steve Key said "The 48-hours runs backward from the meeting time, so it has to be in (the media's) hands 48 hours in advance of the meeting. Posting it legally, but failing to get it in the hands of the media, doesn't absolve the agency from a failure to give proper notice."

The Speedway Navigator did not receive notice until Friday morning. The Navigator also contacted Josh Duke of The Indianapolis Star. He also confirmed that he did not receive notice of the redevelopment authority meeting until Friday. Notice must be given 48 hours in advance, weekends and holidays do not count.
