It is tough times even for the American Cancer Society noted Sibylle Walker,
referring to the donations coming in for the second annual Speedway Relay
for Life.
Sixteen teams signed up to walk for 24 hours to support the cause for finding
a cure for cancer.
Rowdie, the Indianapolis Indiana's Mascot, was among the special guests that came to motivate the walkers for the first hour of the walk. Some participants make the 24 hour a event a home-away-from-home.
Christie Manion used repurposed furniture collected from heavy trash day
to create a cozy living environment next to her tent. Manion was joined
by her Racin' Recyclers teammates Nora Hinchman, Kathy Stresino and
Brena and Mike Martin.
Hinchman became interested in the environment after visiting the Arctic
Refuge twice during her summer vacations. "It was unbelievable. It
made me start thinking," Hinchman had the opportunity to see the coastal
plain. She noted that is the area they want to open up for drilling. "I
saw a herd of caribou."
Hinchman was able to experience 24 hours of sunlight. She found it difficult to adjust to the sunsets when she returned to Indiana. "It felt eerie."
The relay continues until pm Saturday at the Speedway Junior High track.
