Homeowners can expect a 2006-2007 property tax rebate check by the middle of July after the county treasurer's office was not able to insert them with the June reconciliation bill. State representative Phil Hinkle said homeowners can find out if they are receiving a rebate check by calling the Marion County Treasurer's Office or going on line at indygov.org. That was just one of many issues discussed at Hinkle's June 26 Town Hall meeting.

Hinkle doubted if property taxes would ever be eliminated but he thinks it is doable to eliminate the $2.3 billion homestead property tax. He clarified the beneficiaries as owner occupied single family homes.
He said that the property tax replacement credit fund has about $2.1 billion that could offset the loss in property taxes collected. An additional $300 million would be needed from other sources of state revenue. He said the PTRC is capped at $2.1 billion as the reason why the state would have to look at other funds to cover the shortfall. The property tax replacement credit fund is comprised of state income tax and other sources.

Hinkle said consolidation is a "live issue" because the Kernan-Shepherd Report will be up for discussion this fall. He told voters to look for the referendum on the November ballot whether or not they want to keep their township assessor. He thinks if the majority vote is yes that consolidation will become a dead issue.

Hinkle still vowed to fight to keep Speedway from consolidation.
