Temporary Georgetown Rd Closure Still Pending

(posted August 6)

The decision to impose a two week temporary closure of Georgetown Road by the DPW is still pending. A neighborhood impact traffic study by closing the road was requested by The Speedway Navigator after residents in the neighborhood complained that their requests to numerous government agencies were ignored. The Navigator wanted to simulate a road vacation to observe traffic disbursement in the immediate neighborhoods.

DPW Executive Director David Sherman responded on May 26 and concluded that a temporary closure in the last two weeks of August could provide useful data and recommended a resolution by the Indianapolis Board of Public Works for the temporary closure.

The DPW preferred closing Georgetown the last two weeks in August so traffic data would include its effect on the neighborhood schools.

When the Navigator requested information to let the public know about the road closure, DPW public information officer Kit Werbe said they were waiting for information from the Speedway Redevelopment Commission and consultants. She said "Nobody is stalling this project. We just don't have the data we need yet."

City County Councilor Ben Hunter, head of the Public Works Committee, said that he met with Scott Harris and Sherman concerning the issue on August 5th. He stated that Lori Miser of the DPW contends that a study done by the MPO is sufficient, so it might not be necessary to conduct a temporary road closure.
