The Harvest Fair continues to grow each year with more participants to celebrate the grassroots effort that saved Thatcher Park Family Center from being privatized under Mayor Goldsmith's administration. Rhodes Elementary students participated in the Oct 5 talent show for the first time.

Greater Garden City Civic Association President Merri Anderson said they have been trying for a long time to have Rhodes Elementary participate since the school is located in the association's boundaries. Assistant Principal Jennifer Nichols said she enjoyed spending the afternoon at the fair.

The Wayne Township Fire Department provided fire safety tips to children by allowing them to participate in a mobile smoke simulator called the Smoke House.

Gale Lock, fire department community relations, said the unit is a combination fire and tornado safety training area. Lock said the Smoke House is six years old. The prior unit did not offer tornado awareness. The program teaches the difference between a tornado warning and watch.

Firefighter Rick Scott said the house simulates a fire by filling the room with smoke, setting off the smoke detector. Children are taught to get low to the ground and to follow their planned escape route. He said part of fire safety planning is to have an emergency exit plan and a meeting place. The meeting place is essential to know that everyone is out.
