The Crossroads of America Council and Indiana Department of Environmental Management partnered for the first
time to combine community service with the environment. The Cross Roads
of America Council serves 30,000 Cub and Boy Scouts in 25 counties in Central
Indiana. The newly form partnership had a chance to showcase its activities
at the Circuit of Fun event at the IMS on October 11.
"It is exciting to see young people learning how to be good stewards
of the environment," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "The
Boy Scout and Cub Scout programs have a long history of caring for the
environment. If our youth learn to make a difference at an early age then
it will be a lifestyle habit when they are adults."
The kids had a chance to learn physics by pumping air into a water bottle
to see how high it would shoot into the air. Council Activities Director
Ryan Keys explained the circuit provides activities that cub scouts would
see at summer camps, but to a first grader nine months is long time to
wait for summer, so they offer similar activities in the fall.
The kids learn to play chess and marbles to develop mental strength as
well as physical agility.
Keys said this is the fifth year for the Circuit of Fun. Future events
include Pacer and Ice games, and the Supercross race next year at Lucas
Oil stadium. This is Keys' fourth year coordinating the event.
Chuck Walker, the Council's Eastern Section Field Director, noted the program
often helps energize local troops that may be struggling with resources
to provide activities, which include the Gutter Regatta and Pine Wood Derby.
Walker explained the "Race into Scouting" theme made the IMS
a perfect location. Ed Carpenter of Vision Racing was on hand to sign autographs.
