Permit Income Drops for Moto GP

(posted Oct 18)

The Town of Speedway generated about $207,000 in vendor and stand permits for all three races this year. Fees generated from stand and peddler permits for the Moto GP were less than half of what Indy 500 brought in. Moto GP attendance was noticeably smaller than traditional races. Residents who park cars in the area of Georgetown Road reported much less parking than expected.

Stand permits for the NASCAR race generated twice the revenue as the 500 did, while peddler permit fees were half of what the 500 brought in.

The town does not collect peddler and stand permits fees inside the fenced area of the IMS. The IMS is exempt through Municipal Code 5.04.010, which states:

"5.04.010 (a) A license shall be required of any person conducting any of the following activities within the town, except for those activities which are conducted within a fenced-in or otherwise secured area where an admittance fee is regularly charged and where the owner assumes responsibility for policing the activities within the confined area:"

According to Clerk Treasurer Sharon Zishka, "The IMS does pay the appropriate vendor / stand fees for what is placed outside the fenced areas for any and all races."
