Department of Public Works recruited about 75 volunteers from John Marshall Community High School and IUPUI to mark storm drains on the city's east and west sides. The volunteer program identifies the storm drains by placing a "no dumping" sign on the curb. The students brushed away debris and marked outlets. The students also placed door hangars on homes in the neighborhood to explain the importance of keeping pollutants out of the storm drains.

IUPUI Student Amanda Levin explained the storm pipes feed directly into the water streams without going through the waste water treatment plant, so dumping motor oil, fertilizers, and paint would have significant impact to the streams and its habitants. Levin indicated the September 26 field trip made her more aware of pollutants and debris entering the streams.

Cassie Hart explained the project has caused her to be more interested in the environment now and she will probably take more science classes.

The DPW plans to mark 4,000 storm drains by the end of the year, and they are always looking for volunteers.
