Within a short time, Peace in the Streets - Stop the Violence has emerged from the Christamore House located Haughville into a city-wide message. The community based pro-active crime prevention program took another step forward on May 15 by becoming the centerpiece of a partnership among The City of Indianapolis, Speedway Police Department, Crime Stoppers, and Yellow Cab.

Clermont Awards Paving Contract

The Clermont Town Council made a preliminary bid award for the town's 2009 street paving to Harco Paving at its May 14 meeting. The council directed Dick Mosier of Triad Associates to review the six bids in more detail. Harco had the winning bid at $28,013 for the 14 projects. E & B Paving's bid was the highest at $48,100.

SRC May Seek Bonding by June

Speedway Redevelopment Commission Executive Director Scott Harris told SPEED (Speedway People Encouraging Equal Development) members at their May 6 meeting to expect the commission to seek a $24 million bond by June. The bond would pay off the $5.75 million bond anticipation note, with the remaining funds to be used for design and reconstruction of Main Street. Harris said the SRC qualifies for that amount based on current tax increment revenue funds.

One of Allison Transmission's wishes was finally fulfilled on May 13 when the Metropolitan Development Plat Committee approved closing about 1,300 feet of Grande Avenue between its two plants on 10th Street.

The Speedway Town Council approved the resolution for the Speedway Public Library's three-year Library Capital Projects Fund. No remonstrators voiced concerns during the May 11 meeting.

BZA Continues Parking Variance

Mary Gordon is now facing repercussions from actions she took nearly two years ago to expand the parking lot of her real estate business at 5000 Crawfordsville Road. Gordon plead with Board of Zoning Appeals members at their May 6 meeting to grant her a variance after the fact, but the BZA members were not willing to give carte blanche approval based on Gordon's testimony that she was never told she needed a variance.
