Board Passes $3.5 Million Referendum

The Speedway School Board approved a resolution to place a tax increase referendum on the May ballot to reduce its budget deficit. The board approved the measure at its January 12 meeting. According to Superintendent Ken Hull, the tax rate was set at .5900 per $100.00 of assessed valuation, which will generate $3.5 million annually.

Speedway's school board will be looking at a resolution tonight to increase property taxes by placing a referendum on the ballot at the primary election. As of now, the amount of money needed to be collected from taxpayers is still unknown. As of fall 2009, the school was running about a million dollar deficit.

Main Street Gets Phase 1 Funds

The Speedway Redevelopment Authority approved bonding for the first phase of Main Street's renovation project that could cost taxpayers about $26 million by the time it is paid for in 2034.

Coffman and Kellam attended State Representative Phil Hinkle's town hall meeting on September 24 to see if things could be changed from a legislative position.

Probation Office's Ball Back in Council's Court

City County Councillor Janice McHenry lost her constituents' fight with the Administration and Finance Committee to locate a probation/traffic court at 6250 W. 38th Street. The committee voted 4-2-1 to give a favorable recommendation to the full council. The committee voted for the same location in a 6-0 vote on June 9, only to have the council reject the recommendation at its June 29 meeting.

Beech Grove's Financial Woes to Burden Speedway?

Beech Grove Mayor Joe Wright's statement on the effect of HB 1001 on Beech Grove's 2010 budget:

"The fiscal impact of HB 1001 means Beech Grove will lose $1 million in property tax revenue in 2010, a permanent fiscal reduction. A revenue decrease of this magnitude requires a holistic structural change to achieve the reduction while still providing services for our citizens.

Speedway Town Council will conduct a budget hearing on October 5. The public can make comments to the proposed 2010 budget. The budget received a non-binding approval by the City County Council Rules and Policy Committee last week.

SRC May Use Eminent Domain on IV

International Village Apartments could be the first test case for the Speedway Redevelopment Commission to use eminent domain. The commission voted 4-0 at their September 21 meeting to use eminent domain “if necessary against the owners, Resource Real Estate VIP International Village LLC.

Airport Crews Complete Live Fire Training

Firefighters prepare to enter the cabin while others suppress an engine fire.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority Fire Department completed its annual FAA mandated live firefighting training last week, with the help of Kellogg Community College's mobile simulator. The simulator allows fire crews to use their own equipment to fight engine and interior fires, as well as flammable fuel spills and brake fires.

Town Manager Eyes Dumping Heavy Trash Day

Speedway Town Manager Barbara Lawrence's opposition towards the fall heavy trash dropoff took Solid Waste Commission President Ed Stresino by surprise. Lawrence voiced her objections when Stresino presented the commission's plans to the town council at its September 14 meeting.
